Andy Burnham has been accused of acting as a “recruiting sergeant” for people smugglers by promising to accommodate asylum seekers across a broader range of British communities. Robert Bates, research director at the Centre for Migration Control, criticised Burnham’s suggestion that more affluent areas should “play their part” in housing asylum seekers. He argued that continued accommodation and access to services could serve as incentives for further Channel crossings. Robert also warned that the arrival of increasingly large dinghies showed why a strategy focused primarily on disrupting smuggling gangs would fail, as criminal networks could continually adapt their methods.
