hat do people who commit crimes really want—and how different are their desires from everyone else’s? Security, success, recognition, and belonging are universal human needs. Yet the ways people pursue them can lead down very different paths. Drawing on her experiences as a university professor and volunteer police officer in Malaysia, as well as her research involving prisoners and police volunteers, Dr Cheah Phaik-Kin explores how connection and exclusion shape human choices. Through stories from the field, Dr Cheah reveals that when individuals feel supported, valued, and included, they are more likely to use their strengths in service of others. When they feel rejected or disconnected, however, those same human needs can sometimes lead to harmful decisions. Creating safer communities therefore requires more than preventing crime; it begins with everyday acts that foster dignity, belonging, and shared responsibility.
