Hundreds of round stingrays have been found off Southern California’s Seal Beach as warmer coastal waters draw the subtropical species closer to shore, with researchers warning that numbers could reach record levels as El Niño strengthens. Professor Chris Lowe of Long Beach State University said researchers have estimated more than 16,000 rays can occupy an area the size of a football field at the beach. Two state beaches near Huntington Beach have recorded more than 3,100 stingray incidents this year, already twice the total for all of 2025.
