Mumbai’s iconic suburban railway network is set for a major transformation, with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis outlining plans to move towards fully air-conditioned, Metro-style local trains. The proposed revamp focuses on modern AC rakes, closed-door operations and improved passenger safety and comfort. The state had earlier approved 268 fully air-conditioned local trains, with Fadnavis saying the transition would be undertaken without making AC travel prohibitively expensive. As of April 2026, Mumbai’s suburban network was operating 3,234 services, of which 227 were AC services, according to the Railway Ministry. The Railways also said procurement of 238 new 12-car rakes was underway. What will Mumbai’s new-generation locals look like? How quickly can the massive network be converted to AC operations, and what does the revamp mean for millions of daily commuters?
