Millions of patients remain trapped in England’s NHS backlog, with some at risk of dying before receiving treatment, former ONS statistician Jamie Jenkins has warned. Speaking to Julia Hartley-Brewer, Jenkins said around 6.2 million people were waiting across 7.3 million treatment pathways. Although the backlog had fallen slightly, he cautioned that patients can be removed from waiting lists for several reasons — including dying before treatment. Only 66% of patients are reportedly being seen within 18 weeks, well below the NHS target of 92%. Julia branded even that target “unacceptable”, warning: “Eighteen weeks is a heck of a long time. For some people, that’s the difference between living and dying.” Have you got a story?
