A severe drought is taking a heavy toll on agriculture in the Netherlands, with farmers in Zeeland reporting shrinking potato and carrot crops, water shortages and mounting rainfall deficits. Farmer Maarten Janse said Zeeland received just 5 millimeters of rain in July and could receive almost none in August, creating a two-month rainfall deficit of about 180 millimeters on top of shortages from winter and the previous year. Another farmer, Hendrik Jan ten Cate, said his potato crop had deteriorated about a month earlier than usual and was expected to be around one-third below average, with many potatoes too small for French fries. The drought has also affected salt-tolerant samphire crops, while restrictions on water use have limited irrigation in parts of the Netherlands.
