Romania began a controlled shutdown of the second reactor at the Cernavodă nuclear power plant on Thursday as severe drought pushed Danube River water levels to critically low levels needed for reactor cooling. The plant, which can provide about 20% of Romania’s electricity when fully operational, had already shut down its first reactor in late July. Authorities launched emergency engineering measures, including blasting rock and positioning barges near the Bala Canal, but falling water levels ultimately forced the second shutdown.
