My sister’s wedding guests signed this Adirondack chair 10 years ago—but after years outside, it was broken, unstable, and headed for the dump. Before those memories disappeared forever, I decided to see if I could save it. In this furniture restoration project, I replace the damaged wooden side pieces, rebuild the warped armrests, reinforce the frame with hard maple braces, and attempt to match the chair’s faded ebony finish using fire. Along the way, I make pocket-hole mistakes, install an armrest incorrectly, and discover that “keeping the same elegance” may have been a slightly ambitious goal. This repair shows how surprisingly simple it can be to save old wooden furniture when the original parts are still intact enough to use as templates.
