A sudden surge of water and debris entered an under-construction tunnel at the THDC hydropower project in Mayapur near Pipalkoti, Chamoli, on Thursday evening, trapping workers inside. Initial reports said seven workers died and 14 were injured, with rescue teams working to reach those still unaccounted for. However, later reports put the death toll at seven, reflecting updates as the rescue operation progressed.
