More than 360 millimetres of rain fell across parts of Chiba prefecture in just 24 hours, triggering severe flooding near Tokyo during one of Japan’s busiest holiday weeks. Roads and railway lines were inundated, while power was knocked out to nearly 25,000 households. Eyewitness footage showed floodwater rushing down the stairs and escalator of a shopping mall at Chiba Station, a major regional rail hub. Authorities said four people have died so far.
