A wing of Cali’s largest university hospital collapsed after an earthquake, trapping children and adults, including patients recovering from surgery. Families have waited outside the hospital for days, demanding information about their loved ones as rescue efforts continue. Officials have confirmed that people have died inside the collapsed building, but families are still hoping for survivors. Confusion and disorganisation have added to the anguish, with some relatives receiving conflicting information about missing family members. The Legal Institute, which serves as a morgue, has also been forced to operate from tents after its own building was deemed unsafe. Colombia’s president is expected to visit Cali and other badly affected areas, including Chocó, the earthquake’s epicentre. Al Jazeera’s Lucia Newman reports from Cali, Colombia.
