Kevin O’Sullivan and political commentator Benedict Spence examine Nigel Farage’s victory in Clacton, and why the result will not halt the parliamentary investigation surrounding the reported £5 million payment. Benedict argues that Farage’s opponents failed to capitalise on the controversy, with repeated accusations of “sleaze” appearing to bounce off the Reform UK leader. Even if the investigation eventually triggers another by-election, both believe Farage could return to the electorate and win again. Kevin also attacks Kemi Badenoch and the other mainstream parties for condemning Farage while refusing to field candidates against him. But the pair warn that Reform must abandon its increasingly tiresome “victimhood narrative”, stop trading blows with Rupert Lowe and return to a positive political message if it wants to regain momentum.
