On the night of 1 November 1947, a British officer raised the Pakistani flag over Gilgit and instead of a court-martial, he got a medal. This is the story of how Britain handed India its biggest and longest-running geopolitical headache. India's freedom was hard-won, paid for in sacrifice and pain. But it was not free of sabotage. As the Raj folded, British planners left behind a frontier deliberately unfinished: a divided Kashmir, a lost Gilgit-Baltistan, and a buffer state designed to keep India locked out of its own north. In this video we trace how it happened, from Major William Brown's 2 AM coup in Gilgit, to Operation Gulmarg and the tribal invasion of Kashmir, to the desperate 27 October airlift that saved Srinagar by a matter of hours. Who really gave away Gilgit? What happened in Kashmir? Why were both new armies still commanded by British officers? And what did the Cold War have to do with it?
