Afghanistan’s Taliban leaders are marking five years in power after retaking Kabul in August 2021 following the withdrawal of US-led foreign forces. Five years on, the country faces major challenges, including tensions and border clashes with neighbouring Pakistan, economic hardship and a worsening humanitarian crisis. Aid groups say legal protections have been weakened and women have been denied access to education, while the Taliban says Afghanistan’s affairs should be decided by Afghans. The government also faces the challenge of gaining wider international recognition, with Russia maintaining full diplomatic relations while most Western nations have not officially recognised the Taliban government.
