An oil spill from the tanker Caroline Bezengi has spread across 12 kilometres of coastline in Oman’s Ras Madrakah area, threatening fragile marine ecosystems and wildlife habitats. The tanker, carrying around 800,000 barrels of oil, ran aground in June and has been leaking for weeks. Environmental groups warn that the contamination reaching the shoreline could make the cleanup more complex. The vessel is believed to be part of Russia’s so-called shadow fleet and was travelling from a Russian port to India when it reported an explosion off Yemen’s coast. Oman says it is working to contain the spill. Al Jazeera’s Minka Curr reports.
