A Spanish F-18 fighter jet operating on a NATO air-policing mission has shot down a drone after it entered Romanian airspace, according to Romania’s Ministry of National Defense. The incident occurred early on August 16, when Romanian surveillance systems detected an aerial target entering national airspace from the direction of the Republic of Moldova, around 24 kilometers north of Galați. The F-18, operating from Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base, established radar contact with the drone and received authorization to engage. Romanian authorities said the drone was destroyed at 05:01, with possible debris identified in an unpopulated area between Băleni and Cudalbi. The drone’s origin has not been officially identified.
