Thousands gather in Omdurman for Mawlid, the annual celebration of the Prophet Muhammad’s birth, as the city revives the zaffa procession. The festivities return to neighbourhoods affected by fighting after Sudan’s war turned Khartoum’s streets into battlefields in 2023; the army regained control of most of Omdurman in 2024.
