Resident Evil: The Real Reason This Reboot Could Work. Zach Cregger’s new Resident Evil movie isn’t giving fans the faithful video game adaptation many expected, but its controversial approach could finally crack the franchise’s biggest cinematic problem. Rather than retelling Leon Kennedy, Jill Valentine, Chris Redfield, or Claire Redfield’s stories, the Barbarian and Weapons director is introducing a new protagonist played by Austin Abrams.
