Hungary has begun reshaping the bed of the Danube to maintain water levels needed to cool the Paks nuclear power plant as drought and extreme heat drive the river toward record lows. Authorities are sinking two 80-metre barges and using about 145,000 cubic metres of rock to build a riverbed sill designed to raise upstream water levels by as much as one metre. Prime Minister Péter Magyar said the Danube could fall to minus 132 centimetres, potentially forcing one of Paks’ remaining operational turbines to shut down, while a drop to minus 140 centimetres could halt the plant entirely. Paks supplies about a third of Hungary’s electricity.
