A bizarre moment unfolded at the G20 finance meeting in Asheville as Canadian Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne appeared to leave while U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent delivered his opening remarks. The apparent exit came amid an escalating U.S.-Canada trade war, with Ottawa imposing retaliatory tariffs after Washington hit billions of dollars of Canadian goods with a 50% tariff.
