Sudan's army is working to consolidate control of the strategic al-Sadirat, or Exports Road, linking Khartoum with el-Obeid and the wider Kordofan and Darfur regions. The route was controlled by the Rapid Support Forces for much of Sudan's three-year conflict before the army recaptured it last month, along with several towns and cities. Burnt vehicles, abandoned buildings and deserted communities along the highway reveal the scale of the fighting. Jabrat al-Sheikh, one of the largest towns along the route, has become a ghost town after fierce battles drove civilians away. The army is continuing operations to regain territory, while the RSF continues drone attacks on army-controlled areas in Kordofan. Hundreds of thousands of displaced people are still waiting to find out when they can safely return home. Al Jazeera's Hiba Morgan reports from Jabrat al-Sheikh in North Kordofan.
