A domestic abuse survivor fears her abuser will be released early from prison, after receiving a “generic letter” from the probation service. Helen Duncanson's ex-partner Michael Boyes strangled her with her own necklace until she was left unconscious. He was jailed for three and a half years in January. But he may only serve a third of his sentence, under the government’s early prisoner release scheme. Helen says the abuse she suffered was “degrading, humiliating and terrifying”, but was told by the probation service it was “not a serious crime”, which former safeguarding minister Jess Phillips says is “utterly unforgivable”. It comes days after Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s U-turn on the early release scheme after backlash. His intervention means PC Andrew Harper’s killers will remain behind bars, preventing the early release of offenders guilty of manslaughter, as well as rapists, child sexual abusers and groomers.
