France has temporarily relaxed strict production rules for some of its most famous cheeses after a historic drought dried out pastures across the country. Producers of Comté, Beaufort and Abondance can now use grass, hay and other feed brought in from outside their traditional regions. Similar exemptions are expected for several other cheeses and protected food products. The changes are aimed at helping farmers cope with shrinking grass supplies and falling milk production. However, the move raises bigger questions about France’s protected food traditions and the idea of 'terroir'. With climate change making droughts and heatwaves more severe, traditional production methods may increasingly come under pressure. --- France | French cheese | Comte | Beaufort | Abondance | cheese production | French dairy | drought | climate change | heatwave | French farmers | Firstpost #France #FrenchCheese #Cheese #Comte #Beaufort #Abondance #firstpost Firstpost is an Indian news and media website
