NOAA currently gives a greater than 90% chance of a very strong El Niño during late 2026 and early 2027, while several climate models are projecting conditions that could compete with historic events such as the 1997–98 and 2015–16 El Niños. But the most remarkable part of the story may be hidden beneath the Pacific Ocean, where an enormous reservoir of unusually warm water has been building below the surface. As El Niño strengthens, its effects can reach far beyond the Pacific, shifting rainfall, drought, heat, monsoon patterns and extreme-weather risks thousands of kilometers away. Peru is preparing for potential flooding and mudslides, India has faced an unusually weak monsoon, and parts of Australia are watching growing heat, drought and bushfire risks.
