Anti-war demonstrators marched through Cologne on Sept. 1, Germany’s annual Anti-War Day, protesting military rearmament, increased defence spending and arms exports. Demonstrators carried banners opposing militarism and called for public money to be directed toward education and social services instead of weapons. One protester said the rally sought to raise a strong voice against rearmament and war while commemorating the start of World War Two in Europe following Nazi Germany’s invasion of Poland in 1939. Other protesters opposed compulsory military service and called for the Bundeswehr to be kept out of schools. The demonstration coincided with the start of the Rheinmetall Entwaffnen protest camp, whose organizers oppose German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall, rearmament and what they describe as the growing militarisation of German society. #germany #cologne #protest #antiwar #nowar #norearmament #germanrearmament #militaryspending #germanyprotests #antiwarday #bundeswehr #militari
