Australians are constantly told to save, invest and become financially independent. But I think we need to have a serious conversation about whether our policies are actually making that easier. Every housing reform has consequences beyond its headline intention. Change the incentives and people change their behaviour. Push investors towards one part of the market and competition can simply move with them. Meanwhile, first home buyers are still trying to save a deposit while paying higher rents and competing in an undersupplied housing market. I want more Australians owning homes. I want more Australians investing. I want more Australians building enough wealth that they DON’T have to depend entirely on the government later in life. Policy should encourage that.
