The Maldives is known worldwide for turquoise waters, luxury resorts and high-end holidays. But a new Wall Street Journal report has put the island nation in a very different spotlight, as an alleged transit hub helping Russia evade Western sanctions. According to the report, sanctioned goods including aircraft parts, microchips and other sensitive technology are moving through Malé before being sent onward to Moscow. The route reportedly exploits gaps in cargo inspections and customs paperwork, with new air waybills helping obscure the goods' origins and destinations. The trade has also brought economic benefits to the Maldives, including increased cargo-handling activity and fuel sales, while Russian tourists remain an important source of visitors.
