Andy Burnham is backing plans to hand over sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, a Foreign Office minister has indicated. Uma Kumaran told MPs that maintaining long-term operational control of the UK-US base on the island of Diego Garcia remains “a top priority” for the Government. The deal to hand over the British Indian Ocean Territory while retaining control of the military base on Diego Garcia was paused in April after opposition from the Trump administration.
