The Environment Agency has announced that a team of 33 trained drone pilots will be used to track illegal dumping and bring people responsible for waste crime to justice. Illegal dumping has escalated in recent years, with high-profile illegal tips provoking public anger, including the 150-metre-long dump near the River Cherwell in Oxfordshire and a 30,000-tonne heap in the protected area of Hoads Wood in Kent. The government has been criticised for failing to clear sites and prosecute those responsible and it increased the Environment Agency’s budget for waste crime enforcement by more than 50 per cent this year to £15.6 million.
