In Thunder Bay, Prime Minister Mark Carney answered U.S. officials — including Howard Lutnick — who claimed Canada walked away from trade talks for domestic politics and that any future deal will be worse. Carney said he communicates with Canadians and with the president, and that appointed unelected American cabinet members are not experts on Canadian politics. He said the United States held take-it-or-leave-it red lines until the last hour, including language, culture, and auto terms that would have carved out vehicles such as Oakville-built F-350s, then changed its story after the talks died. Canada suspended negotiations because it could not accept what was offered and would not give what was asked. Carney called the new tariffs a miscalculation and announced a $4.7 billion investment to build 313 Via Rail cars in Canada — work that used to go to the United States.
