A runaway supermassive black hole may have been thrown completely out of its galaxy — and new observations from the James Webb Space Telescope are helping astronomers understand how it happened. Known as RBH-1, this extraordinary object appears to be racing through space at roughly 954 km/s while leaving behind a massive trail of gas and young stars stretching around 200,000 light-years. The strange structure was first discovered with the Hubble Space Telescope, but new JWST observations revealed evidence of a powerful supersonic bow shock at its leading edge. Then came an even more surprising development. In 2026, physicists worked backward from the black hole's incredible velocity to reconstruct the kind of ancient supermassive black hole merger that could have launched it. Their results suggest that rapidly spinning, misaligned black holes may have merged and produced an enormous gravitational-wave recoil — effectively kicking the newly formed black hole out of its galaxy.
