Today, the Matildas are Australia’s most loved national team. Its players are spread across the globe; experiencing careers and lives that are professional and high profile in equal measure. This wasn’t always the case. As recently as 1990 - when the ‘Matildas’ nickname was still years away from first entering the national lexicon - there wasn’t a single Australian women’s footballer playing abroad. Aspirations spotlights the blind faith of Julie Murray and Carol Vinson, the first Australian women to try their hand at a full time football experience outside of their home country. It is their formative footsteps that first awakened their peers to the avenues of opportunity that would, decades later, become well trodden by so many.
