The US Army is taking a major step toward practical laser warfare, signing its first production contract for a high-energy laser system designed to destroy drones. The $464-million programme promises an extraordinarily low cost per shot, potentially transforming the economics of air defence. Developed by AeroVironment, the system uses a 30-kilowatt laser to target small and medium-sized aerial threats. The move follows lessons from the Iran war, where expensive missiles were used against swarms of low-cost drones.
