When the hotheaded Nawab Siraj-ud-Daula sacked British Calcutta in June 1756, the East India Company responded with force. Robert Clive sailed up the Hooghly with 2,000 men, retook Calcutta, and ambushed the Nawab's 40,000-strong army by the riverbanks. Cowed by the assault, Siraj signed the Treaty of Alinagar—a fragile peace before Plassey. #EastIndiaCompany #RobertClive #IndiaHistory #HistoryShorts #BattleOfCalcutta #Bengal #BritishEmpire
