The United Nations General Assembly has voted to replace the traditional Mercator projection world map, which has been in use for over 450 years, with a more accurate representation of continent sizes. The historic map, created by Gerardus Mercator in 1569, has been criticised for distorting sizes, showing Africa as similar in size to Greenland when it is actually 14 times larger. The resolution passed with 164 votes in favour, with only the United States voting against it.
