The US Army is taking a major step toward practical laser warfare with its first production contract for a high-energy laser system designed to destroy drones. The $464-million programme aims to provide a potentially revolutionary low-cost option for air defence, with each laser shot expected to cost far less than traditional interceptor missiles. Developed by AeroVironment, the system uses a 30-kilowatt high-energy laser to engage small and medium-sized aerial threats. The programme reflects lessons from recent conflicts, including the Iran war, where costly missiles were used against large numbers of relatively inexpensive drones. The technology could reshape modern counter-drone warfare and the economics of battlefield air defence. --- US Army | Laser Warfare | High-Energy Laser | Laser Weapon | Drone Warfare | Counter-Drone System | AeroVironment | 30-Kilowatt Laser | $464 Million Programme | Air Defence | Military Technology | US Military | Drone Defence | Directed Energy Weapon
