The world map could soon get a major makeover as the UN backs efforts to more accurately represent Africa's size. On September 5, the UN General Assembly passed the 'Correct the Map' resolution with 164 votes in favour. The US voted against it, with six abstentions. Sponsored by Togo, the resolution challenges the centuries-old Mercator map, which makes Africa appear similar in size to Greenland, despite being 14 times larger. The resolution promotes the Equal Earth projection, an equal-area map developed in 2018 and adopted by the African Union's 54 members in February. India has backed the change, while France says it will stop using the Mercator map. Firstpost explains why the UN wants to 'correct the map' and how the change could reshape the way the world sees Africa. --- Africa map | New world map | UNGA | the correct map | UNGA resolution | Africa Union | Togo | Equal Earth projection | Africa actual size | Firstpost #africa #africamap #africanunion #worldmap #unga #unresolut
