Something strange is happening to Betelgeuse. New observations from ALMA have revealed enormous hotspots and an increasingly asymmetric atmosphere around the famous red supergiant. Even more surprisingly, one major hotspot appears to have remained in almost the same location for more than seven years — much longer than astronomers would normally expect from giant stellar convection. But the mystery gets even deeper. Astronomers have also found strong evidence for a hidden companion star, known as Betelgeuse B, orbiting extremely close to Betelgeuse and moving through its extended atmosphere. Could this companion be influencing the strange behavior around Betelgeuse? Why are some hotspots so persistent? And could these observations help scientists understand what happens to massive stars before they eventually become supernovae? In this video, we explore the latest Betelgeuse discoveries, the mysterious long-lived hotspots, the Great Dimming, Betelgeuse B, ALMA observations, and what al
