A political earthquake could be unfolding in Germany as voters in Saxony-Anhalt cast ballots in an election that could give the far-right AfD state-level governing power for the first time. AfD lead candidate Ulrich Siegmund is targeting an outright majority after months of strong polling, with surveys putting the party above 40%—well ahead of Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s CDU at around 23%. An AfD majority could break the political firewall that has kept mainstream parties from governing alongside the party, marking a major breakthrough in its push toward national power. With around 1.7 million voters eligible and coalition talks likely if the AfD falls short, the result could become a crucial test for Merz’s government and Germany’s rapidly shifting political landscape. #AfD #SaxonyAnhaltElection #GermanyElection #AfDGermany #UlrichSiegmund #FriedrichMerz #CDU #GermanPolitics #GermanyElection2026 #AfDMajority #SaxonyAnhalt #GermanElection #MerzVsAfD #AfDPower #GermanyPolitics #Break
