AfD just delivered a historic thrashing to Chancellor Merz’s party. 44% in Saxony-Anhalt. CDU collapsed to 17%. Germany’s political map just changed. What You Need to Know Alternative for Germany (AfD) won 43.8% in the Saxony-Anhalt state election, more than doubling its previous result. Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s CDU suffered its worst-ever result in the state, dropping to 17.2%. AfD fell just short of an absolute majority (39 of 83 seats) but claimed a clear mandate to govern. Lead candidate Ulrich Siegmund declared “We have made history” and “We are taking our country back.” Mainstream parties maintain the “firewall” against working with AfD, creating a major government formation crisis. High turnout and the scale of the result put intense pressure on Merz’s national government. This is one of the biggest far-right breakthroughs in modern German politics.
