Hundreds of European steelworkers and industry representatives protested in Brussels, carrying black coffins marked “Rest in Peace, European Factory” and “Rest in Peace, European Competitiveness” as they warned that Chinese and other Asian competition is driving manufacturing, investment and jobs out of Europe. The EUROMETAL-led demonstration outside the European Commission called for tougher trade measures, including tariffs on finished steel-containing goods, with protesters arguing that European producers face carbon costs and trade restrictions that imported products can avoid. EUROMETAL estimates Europe could lose another 300,000 manufacturing jobs in 2026, although the figure is an industry estimate rather than an official EU forecast. The protest comes as the European Commission reviews whether its carbon and trade protections should cover more steel-intensive products. #europe #europeanunion #steel #steelindustry #europeansteel #brussels #china #chineseimports #manufacturing #
