Economist Stephen Millard is left struggling to name a worse political phrase than Chancellor John Healey’s new slogan: “Make Great Britain, Growth Britain again.” The deputy director of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research suggests the Conservatives’ 2017 campaign line, “strong and stable government in the national interest,” may be a contender. The slogan comes as Jaguar Land Rover announces plans to cut thousands of jobs. Stephen says the decision is devastating for the affected workers but argues that JLR’s difficulties do not necessarily reflect the wider economy, which he describes as “remarkably resilient”.
