Astronomers searching for Dyson spheres and alien megastructures analyzed roughly five million stars — and eventually narrowed the search down to just seven mysterious candidates. The research, known as Project Hephaistos, searched data from Gaia, 2MASS, and NASA’s WISE telescope for unusual infrared excess: the kind of waste-heat signature scientists have proposed could potentially reveal an advanced alien civilization harvesting energy from its star. These unusual Dyson sphere candidates were all M-dwarf stars displaying strange infrared behavior. But determining what was actually producing that heat required much more powerful observations. That’s where the James Webb Space Telescope entered the investigation. Using JWST’s powerful infrared instruments, astronomers began looking much more closely at some of these mysterious stars — and what Webb discovered changed the story. So have scientists finally detected evidence of an alien megastructure, or is something else hiding around th
