Comedian Jon Stewart, a long-time advocate for September 11 first responders and survivors, criticised former New York City officials for withholding information about health concerns following the 2001 attacks. "We've lost three times as many people to 9/11-related illnesses as we did on 9/11," Stewart said alongside advocates and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. His comments came after the city announced the release of more than 170,000 pages of records documenting its response to the attacks and their aftermath. The announcement also included a settlement of two lawsuits seeking access to files related to post-9/11 health and air quality concerns. The documents, available through a new city online portal, include records on health issues, air quality and the broader municipal response to the attacks, according to Mr Mamdani's office. They also include the so-called Harding memo, previously unlocated records known as the "68 boxes," and files concerning World Trade Center 7.
