New York City has released more than 170,000 pages of records related to the September 11 terror attacks and their aftermath on Tuesday, Sept. 8, ahead of the 25th anniversary of 9/11. The records indicate that the city officials knew air around Ground Zero was unsafe to breathe despite public assurances at the time. NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani said more people have now died from 9/11-related illnesses than were killed in the attacks, highlighting the lasting impact on survivors and workers exposed to toxic air around Ground Zero. The city also settled two lawsuits seeking access to post-9/11 records related to health and air-quality concerns, and will assign staff to help people document their presence in the New York City Exposure Zone for federal health and compensation programs. Available through a new online portal, the documents also cover health concerns and the wider municipal response to the attacks. More documents are expected to be released over the next 12 months.
