A GP says some people may use mental health as an excuse to avoid work, but argues that the majority of patients he encounters have genuine difficulties. Dr Steve Taylor says he has also treated people who continue working under severe stress because they cannot afford to take sick leave. He argues that remaining in employment can benefit many patients, provided they receive appropriate support from employers and health services. The discussion follows a survey suggesting about one in five Britons believes mental health problems are sometimes being used to avoid work. Dr Taylor also explains the difference between clinical depression or chronic stress and the ordinary unhappiness, frustration and pressure people experience in everyday life. Have you got a story?
