Japan is preparing to host the Asian Games in Nagoya, but this edition is taking a very different approach to athlete accommodation. Instead of building a traditional athletes’ village, organisers have opted to house competitors across hotels, a cruise ship and temporary accommodation facilities. The unusual model has already faced an early test after heavy rain forced hundreds of people to evacuate, raising questions about preparedness, logistics and the resilience of the accommodation plan. Nagoya’s decision reflects an effort to use existing infrastructure and avoid the costs associated with constructing a large athletes’ village. But with the Games approaching, the arrangement will face close scrutiny from athletes, organisers and officials. Rupha Ramani examines why Nagoya chose this model and what it could mean for the Asian Games. --- Asian Games | Nagoya Asian Games | Japan | Nagoya | Athletes Village | Athlete Accommodation | Asian Games 2026 | Japan Sports | Cruise Ship Acco
