In 1907, Nettie Bainbridge won the very first international beauty contest in Folkestone. The prize was twenty gold sovereigns. The judging involved putting your head through a frame with bright lights to make sure you weren't wearing makeup. She was 83 when she sat down with Michael Parkinson and looked, as he noted, remarkably similar. Eva Von Rueber-Staier won Miss World in 1969 and found that men were rather more intimidated by her afterwards than before. She solved this with a matchmaker on a film set. She also found that the promise of film tests and international stardom that comes with the title tends not to materialise, which she had sensibly suspected from the start. The two of them talk about pillow fights with Miss Belgium, security guards knocking down doors, and what actually happens to a woman's life after a year of being told she is the most beautiful in the world.
