A new unit to improve outcomes for the working class is to be established within Government, as the equalities minister declared: “We have been squeamish about class for too long.” Bridget Phillipson said social class is a “deep barrier to opportunity” and repeated Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s political mantra that his Government will “bring hope back to communities”. The new unit will sit in the Office for Equality and Opportunity alongside units on race, women, LGBT+ and disability, and reflect the role of class in how people are treated and the opportunities they have in life, the Government said. Speaking with Director of Research at the Centre for Social Justice Edward Davies and Director of Blue Collar Conservatism Clark Vasey, Talk's Ian Collins says: "Many people will say it's about time too. Others might not unreasonably say, and I kind of said this at the beginning myself, I sort of feel it's a bit of deja vu, a little bit of groundhog day here." #bridgetphilipson #class
