Republican Sen. Roger Marshall of Kansas is facing backlash this morning after a New York Times report revealed he filed hundreds of debt-collection lawsuits against former patients during his time as an OB-GYN. Dozens were later arrested for missing court dates. According to The Times, Marshall’s office routinely charged patients an 18% annual interest rate, raising their debts even higher. A spokesperson for Sen. Marshall defended his actions. Sen. Marshall’s opponent, Democratic nominee Rev. Adam Hamilton, joins Morning Joe to discuss his campaign, the controversy and why he believes it speaks to the larger issue of medical debt across the nation.
